We’re proud to be residents of Brevard County and can hardly contain our enthusiasm about Brevard County’s history & unique features. Our guests choose Tuckaway Shores not only for our unspoiled beaches, but to explore our vibrant community.
Whether you are a local or first time guest, there’s always something new to learn about our community and Melbourne Beach. We hope you’ll enjoy these fun facts:
- Explorer Ponce de Leon discovered Melbourne Beach in April of 1513.
- Brevard County was established in 1854 and named after Theodorus W. Brevard, Florida’s comptroller at the time. This position is now called Chief Financial Officer.
- Tuckaway Shores is located along 72 miles of beach known as Florida’s Space Coast. Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center are located along the Space Coast and the name harkens to the significance the community has played our space program.
- Brevard County’s area code 321 is no coincidence. In 1999, resident Robert Osband successfully led a petition for this area code to be assigned to the county to acknowledge its identity as part of Florida’s Space Coast.
- Florida’s Space Coast contains 250 miles of protected wildlife sanctuaries.
- Manatees play a significant role in Brevard County. Manatees are the name of the county’s minor-league baseball team and also an endangered species that calls the county home. You can actually view West Indian Manatees at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge observation deck.
- According to Melbourne Beach’s Chamber of Commerce, residents enjoy an average temperature is 72 degrees and 300 sunny days per year.
